It is an anthology that is written with real distinction – a Filipino literary classic. This is Nick Joaquin’s first book (Manila: Graphic, 1952) and included his play, “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.” The play was later produced by the Barangay Theater Guild in the bombed ruins of Intramuros, and has since been filmed.

Title: A PORTABLE RIZAL READER: SELECTED ESSAYS & POEMS

This book of selected essays and poems is the Order of the Knights of Rizal’s contribution to the 1998 centennial celebration of the Philippines. It is intended to provide reading materials for Rizal enthusiasts who have limited access to Filipiniana publications and as a teaching tool for Rizalistas. The book’s Part 1 includes the most important essays of Rizal and other selected authors. Part 2 consists of question-guides on his biography, novels and essays. Part 3 is a compilation of exploratory notes and selected sources and suggested readings. The format is designed to be interactive and participatory. The publisher hopes to encourage interest among the overseas Filipinos to read about Rizal and the Philippines.
