Most of the themes in the stories are universal ones of good and evil, time and eternity, past and present, love and its absence, freedom and fate. A must read. It is an anthology that is written with real distinction – a Filipino literary classic. This is Nick Joaquin’s first book (Manila: Graphic, 1952) and included his play, “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino.” The play was later produced by the Barangay Theater Guild in the bombed ruins of Intramuros, and has since been filmed.
